The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced the restart of cargo services at its Eldoret International Airport, as Astral Aviation flight from from Sharjah, UAE, was received at the airport with water cannon salute to mark the event.
“After a year-long hiatus, Eldoret International Airport has made a significant stride in the aviation industry by resuming cargo flight operations, starting with Astral Aviation leading the way,” KAA stated.
It said that this noteworthy development comes as a result of concerted efforts by the KAA and key aviation stakeholders, including the Kenya Airfreight Handling Limited (KAICC), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and with the invaluable support of the North Rift Economic Bloc (NoREB).
This momentous occasion was graced by several high-profile figures, including Nandi County Governor and Chair of NOREB, H.E. Stephen Sang, KAA Board Chairman, Hon. Caleb Kositany, and KRA Board Chairman, Mr. Anthony Mwaura, among other distinguished government officials, underscoring the collaborative spirit and shared vision to transform Kenya’s cargo industry.
At the Eldoret Airport, Hon Kositany shared his insights on the venture’s potential to elevate cargo traffic, improve connectivity, and stimulate trade and global opportunities for the region.
Hon. Kositany further emphasized the crucial role of air cargo in the aviation industry and highlighted KAA’s ongoing strategy to bolster cargo handling capabilities across its network. “Air cargo is an integral component of the aviation industry,” he remarked, acknowledging the importance of public-private partnerships in developing and advancing the Authority’s projects.
KAA said that Eldoret International Airport is uniquely positioned to serve as a hub for agribusiness exports, with its two warehouses capable of handling over 100 metric tons of dry cargo. The airport’s strategic location and favorable climatic conditions make it an ideal gateway for exporting agricultural produce, including cut flowers, French beans, and avocados, among others.
“This resumption of cargo flights is not just a win for the aviation sector but a boost for the region’s agricultural stakeholders, promising enhanced market access and growth opportunities,” KAA added.
